Vertical Farming: Investing in the Future of Food

Transforming our food systems to produce safe, healthy and sustainable food to feed the growing global population and the increased demand for “better food for more” is one of the greatest challenges in the food sector. Vertical farming is one of the solutions to producing enough food, while minimising the environmental impact, as it offers more crops on less land, year-round production not limited by natural seasons, no/low use of chemicals or pesticides and close proximity to consumers.
Singapore has defined its national ’30-by-30’ goal of producing 30% of agri-food locally and sustainably by 2030. The city state aims to foster its domestic agri-food ecosystem featured of innovation and sustainability and establish itself as an agri-food tech hub of Asia. Vertical farming is one of the ways to ensure the food security and self-reliance of the country.
Denmark is an ‘Agricultural Superpower’, a leading food hub in Europe, and a global role model for sustainable food production and innovation. Denmark has set its goal to have Danish food production completely climate-neutral by 2050. The Danish recipe is made up of collaborative efforts across the entire food value chain, innovative technologies and sustainable solutions, heavily flavoured with concern for the climate and spiced with low-priced renewable energy. When it comes to vertical farming, Denmark have the prerequisites to become a leading country.
At this online session, several industry experts from Denmark and Asia will be sharing more about the market perspectives, current and up-and-coming agri-food tech projects, technology and innovation, and the potential to create a more sustainable food system.

Signe Vaerbak, Senior Innovation Manager and Vertical Farming Network Lead in Food & Bio Cluster Denmark
Signe holds an MSc in Horticulture, PhD in Plant Breeding, and BA in Leadership.
Signe has 30 years’ experience with plant breeding, product development and plant production in greenhouses and 12 years’ experience with innovation, project development, fundraising and project management in the green industry. Before working for Food & Bio Cluster Denmark, Signe worked for Daehnfeldt, Sakata, AgroTech, Graff Breeding, BG-Breeding and Chr. Hansen Natural Colors/Oterra and as an independent consultant.
Steen Therald Beyer, Export Sales Manager, Viemose DGS
Steen is currently the Export Sales Manager for Viemose DGS and responsible for sales and marketing of Moving Gutter Systems (MGS) and other automated cultivation systems for greenhouse / indoor cultivation, and participating in R&D within MGS and growth systems. Before working for Viemose DGS, Steen worked for The Morse Company, USA, in sales of marketing of automated production equipment and accessories, and as part of the R&D input team.
Alex Christian Pichardt, CEO & Co-founder, Micro Greens Denmark
Alex is the CEO and co-founder of Micro Greens Denmark. Before setting up Micro Greens Denmark, he worked as an educated Chef and in the Danish military.
Luke Tay, Founder, Cornucopia FutureScapes
Luke is a futurist, historian, and political scientist. He recently launched an independent, globally-oriented foresight and strategy practice with a focus on food-energy-water, sustainability, technology, and geopolitics, after serving for two decades in the transport and agrifood spheres of the Singapore public service. Themes of particular interest include urban/periurban food system transformation; (mis)information, persuasion, and food citizenship; the future of autarky and friendshoring for strategic value chains including for Indo-Pacific food regionalism; and tech and policy imperatives for antifragile future food systems, such as scaling up personalised nutrition, embracing mariculture, and effecting climate and biosphere engineering.
