High-performance advanced materials are at the core of the technological innovations needed to reach a sustainable, climate-neutral economy and society. Such materials are a part of the solution to our global challenges, offering better performance in their use, at a lower cost, resource and energy requirements, and improved sustainability at the end-of-life of the products. The development of these new materials could transform our world over the next few decades. We will require Advanced Material innovations across industries and all sectors of the economy to sustain our current and future consumption levels.

Prof Dimitris Angelakis, Principal Investigator, Centre for Quantum Technologies, Singapore and Associate Professor, Technical University of Crete
Prof Dimitris Angelakis is a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at the National University of Singapore, leading the Quantum Simulators and Quantum Technologies Group. He is also an Associate Professor at the School of ECE, Technical University of Crete. He is known for his works in quantum computation and as a pioneer of quantum simulations with light-matter systems. He completed his PhD at Imperial College in Quantum Optics with Prof Sir P Knight FRS and then moved to Cambridge University in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and the Centre for Quantum Computing as an independent St Catharine's College Research Fellow.
Dimitris' research has received several awards including two Google Quantum Innovation Awards, the Valerie Myescrough Award from the University of London, and the Quantum Electronics and Photonics PhD Thesis Prize from the Institute of Physics, United Kingdom. He is serving in different academic and national science advisory bodies including the European National Quantum Network of the European Flagship Project in Quantum Technologies.
In parallel to his academic work, he consults for industry, banking and IT sectors about the potential applications of quantum computing in business.
Dr Yang Le, Group Leader - Institute of Materials Research & Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR
Yang Le received a Bachelor of Science (1st Class Honours) in Chemistry from Imperial College London, and PhD (Optoelectronics, Physics) from the University of Cambridge, under the A*STAR National Science Scholarship.
In Cambridge, under the supervision of Prof Sir Richard H Friend who has been a leading pioneer in plastic electronics, the experience brought her to the frontier of novel optoelectronics. Her breakthrough came when she and her colleagues discovered a new emission mechanism in a class of new materials, leading to record-efficiency organic LEDs, an achievement useful for next-generation printable display technology. She is now working in the Institute of Materials Research & Engineering (IMRE, A*STAR) on luminescent materials, flexible electronics and smart biomedical sensors, leading the “PROFESS” Group (Printed Organic Flexible Electronics & Sensors). Yang Le has been actively involved with the local materials research ecosystem, such as being an active part of the Materials Research Society-Singapore and chairing national and international materials conferences, workshops and outreach events. Yang Le was also a recipient of the Career Development Award, as well as being a Finalist in the Singapore L’OReal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship 2018.
Prof Robert Simpson, Associate Professor, Singapore University of Technology and Design
Prof Robert E Simpson is an Associate Professor within the Engineering Product Development Pillar and Co-director of the Innovation by Design programme at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Robert is also an Associate Editor for the Optical Society of America Journal, Optical Materials Express.
Robert received his PhD from the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton in the UK in 2008. After his PhD, Robert was awarded Marie Curie and Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowships. His JSPS fellowship was spent at the Japanese National Institute for Applied Industrial Science and Technology, where Robert researched phase change data storage materials. Later, he joined the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona as a Marie Curie Fellow and developed tunable photonic devices.
In 2012 Robert formed the Advanced Chalcogenides Technologies & Applications Lab (www.actalab.com). The lab’s research interests centre on the physics of chalcogenide materials and methods to design chalcogenide properties for applications in electronics and photonics.
Suchitra Narayan, Director - Venture Building, SGInnovate
Suchi has almost 20 years of experience in venture building, product development, business strategy and corporate partnerships across global markets, with a strong focus in Australia and Asia. In her current capacity as Director - Venture Building, Suchi acts as a lead to new projects, provides business-building guidance in areas such as business planning, commercial strategy and scaling growth to new and ‘built-from-scratch’ Deep Tech startups.
Prior to SGInnovate, she was Vice President, Sales and Service at Gartner, where she was providing strategic advisory to APAC leaders on go-to-market, business development as well as commercial strategies in Asia. An engineer by training, she has a particular interest in Robotics, Health-tech and Artificial Intelligence. She is also passionate about supporting more women in pursuing an education and career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
