Sundown Drinks: (NLP x DNN) ≥ Humans: A New Work Order?

Presented by SGInnovate

With more organisations considering how AI can positively impact their business, we are seeing the spotlight being shone on one of the hottest jobs this century: The Data Scientist.

The job of being a Data Scientist has been named:

  • No. 1 on Glassdoor’s 50 Best Jobs In America for four consecutive years (2014 – 2018
  • No. 1 on LinkedIn’s Most Promising Jobs of 2019

However, complex data science algorithms are becoming easier and more scalable (cue Deep Neural Networks (DNN)). Will Data Scientists be relevant in the next 20 years to come, or will they be replaced by the very technology they developed? What is the next phase expected in future of AI?

Join us as we dive deeper into Natural Language Processing (NLP) and DNN, and the future of Data Scientists with our expert panellists.

This event is jointly organised with Comet, an exclusive, by-invite only session, where highly sought after Deep Tech talents will have dedicated 1-1 meetings with high-potential Deep Tech companies to explore potential job or collaboration opportunities.

Speakers’ Profiles:

Dr Michal Polanowski, Head of Data Science for Gojek Financial Services

Dr. Michal Polanowski is the Head of Data Science for Gojek Financial Services. Michal has many different degrees in IT, Finance, and Financial Planning. Before Gojek, he worked for one of the largest grocery stores in the US, Walt Disney Company, and Lazada.

At Gojek, he built a team responsible for all elements related to risk management of financial services. His team helps Indonesians access financial services when the traditional banking information is not available.

Apart from that, the team builds various risk models for customers, merchants, and drivers (application and behaviour scores) as well as conceptualise marketing initiatives with incentives allocation and targeting. The team also focusses on R&D on GeoSpatial and network data.

Soujanya Poria, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

Soujanya Poria is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Stirling, UK. He is a recipient of the prestigious early career research award called ‘NTU Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship’ in 2018 which offered him a research grant worth US$150,000. Before taking up his presidential fellowship position at the National Technological University (NTU), Soujanya was a scientist at the A*STAR and the Temasek Laboratory, NTU. He is also (co-)PI of multiple academic and industrial grants with the amount totaling to US$1.5m.

Soujanya has co-authored more than 70 papers, published in top-tier conferences and journals such as ACL, EMNLP, AAAI, NAACL, Neurocomputing, Computational Intelligence Magazine, etc. in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), multimodal sentiment analysis and dialogue systems. He is also an adjunct faculty at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, India. Soujanya served as a senior PC member at AAAI 2019, IJCAI 2019 and often serve as a PC member in reputed conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, IJCAI, NAACL. He was an area co-chair at NAACL 2019, EMNLP 2019, ACL 2019 and a publicity chair at *SEM 2019. He serves the editorial board of several renowned journals such as IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine. Soujanya has given several invited talks at venues like CICLing 2018, SocialNLP 2019. Soujanya has Google Scholar citations of more than 5000 and his h-index is 37. Recently, in an article published in the Journal of Information Sciences, Soujanya has been listed as one of the most prolific and impactful researchers from 2000 to 2016 in the field of sentiment analysis.
