Overview

The Entrepreneurial Scientist brings research out of the lab to start a business. The challenges come hard and fast - market and early adopter identification; user needs specification; product development; pilots or trials; go-to-market preparations; funding; critical hiring at the initial phase, etc.

In this session, join two Deep Tech entrepreneurs (one in MedTech and the other in Quantum Computing) as they share their journeys in transforming their lab prototypes to commercially viable products. They are from different industry sectors, at different stages in their entrepreneurial journeys, in different market environments. With this, we hope the event will enable the sharing of varied experiences and trigger a lively discussion.

Speakers' Profiles:

Dr Joe Fitzsimons, Chief Executive Officer, Horizon Quantum Computing

Driven by the vision of Quantum Computing as a revolution in Computing Technology, Dr Joe Fitzsimons quit his tenured faculty position to found Horizon Quantum Computing in 2018. Drawing on over 15 years' experience in Quantum Computing and Computational Complexity Theory, today he fully dedicates his time to Horizon with the goal of making Quantum Computing a general-purpose computing technology capable of addressing some of the world's most challenging computational problems.

Joe received a Bachelor of Science in Theoretical Physics from the University College Dublin and a PhD from Oxford, where he went on to become a Fellow of Merton College. Prior to founding Horizon, he led the Quantum Information and Theory group at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, where he was a tenured Associate Professor and was a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Quantum Technologies. He has published at the highest levels in both Theoretical Computer Science (FOCS, STOC, CCC, ITCS) and Physics (Science, Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, Physical Review X). He has been named as a National Research Foundation Fellow and to the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Asia list.

Dr Lynne Lim, Senior Consultant Ear Nose Throat Surgeon, Lynne Lim Ear Nose Throat & Hearing Centre

Dr Lynne Lim is an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) surgeon with over 20 years of clinical experience. She is a proud alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Her subspecialty training was at the Cincinnati Children Hospital and Research Foundation, USA, and other Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) fellowship stints, under the Singapore Ministry of Health, were in Japan, Virginia and California. To get a better understanding of the challenges in public health, and to better integrate the realms of research, education and clinical work, Lynne did her Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She has pioneered many new clinical programs, surgeries and public outreach initiatives, and has been active in competitive grant-funded research. Lynne founded the Master of Audiology Program at the National University of Singapore and was Vice Dean of Academic Affairs there before venturing into her private clinical practice in 2014.

Lynne is working on CLiKX, a handheld applicator that aims to insert an ear tube onto the eardrum to treat glue ears. Glue ear is the most common reason why children worldwide require surgery under General Anaesthesia (GA), and why they are prescribed antibiotics. CLiKX can potentially insert the tube with just a click of the finger, under one second, without GA nor expensive microscope, with less risk and costs, and millions more can be helped.
