Overview

This course offers a comprehensive overview of the translational medicine landscape, emphasizing the interplay among various stakeholders. Students will participate in personal and professional development activities to become adept leaders in TM. The curriculum encourages a systems thinking approach, enabling students to foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning. By understanding and utilizing system dynamics, students will learn to promote innovation effectively. Upon completion, students will be equipped to assess the entire TM system holistically, tackling root causes of issues rather than merely addressing symptoms.

Course Description & Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to:

·       Hone their ability to communicate effectively across broad audiences, including patients, healthcare providers, and the broader community.

·       Examine case studies and develop creative problem-solving strategies and novel skills to build new kinds of teams.

·       Analyse the business, scientific, and regulatory aspects of TM, and develop critical thinking skills to approach and explore the challenges while achieving collaborative practices with stakeholders.

Network and connect with individuals across the TM pathway, specifically within the Eureka Network, to foster collaborative practices and enhance healthcare services.

Professor Salvatore Albani, Professor, SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre
Professor Salvatore Albani

Professor Salvatore Albani is an internationally renowned rheumatologist and immunologist. He is a Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Director of the Translational Immunology Institute at SingHealth- Duke-NUS Medical Centre. Before joining Duke-NUS, Professor Albani served as director of the Translational Medicine Unit at the Clinical Investigation Institute at the University of California, San Diego, where he also was professor of Medicine and Pediatrics. His fundamental research interest is in understanding human immunity and contributing the knowledge to therapeutic and diagnostic advancements. He has developed several innovative approaches in the area of induction and maintenance of immune tolerance in humans, being responsible for the whole translational process from idea to the conclusion of a Phase II clinical trial in autoimmune inflammatory diseases, which have a large impact on society and individuals.

Professor Scott Compton

Professor Scott Compton is Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, Deputy Head of Office (Education), and Program Director of the Master of International Translational Medicine program at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. Prof Compton earned his PhD from Wayne State University (USA) in Educational Evaluation & Research. He has an extensive research background in both Emergency Medicine and Medical Education. Since joining Duke-NUS in 2012, he has been dedicated to elevating the institution's educational strategy, ensuring it not only aligns with but also exceeds international excellence benchmarks.

Raihan Jumat

Dr. Raihan Jumat is a dedicated educator and educationalist with a career in designing and leading educational programs, particularly in medical education and translational medicine. Leveraging his background as a virologist, Raihan brings a unique and interdisciplinary perspective to his teaching and research. Raihan’s academic interests include assessments, burnout, grit, and team-based learning, reflecting his commitment to fostering innovative and impactful educational practices. He has held teaching positions at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and King Abdullah University of Science & Technology in Saudi Arabia. His teaching portfolio spans diverse learner groups, from high school students to postgraduate scholars, equipping him with a broad and enriching understanding of educational needs across levels.
