CTO becomes a trainee again

From a CTO to trainee, Cheng Yi Chiao’s tech career receives a new lease of life through SGInnovate’s PowerX Robotics Programme.

Someone who once helmed top leadership roles such as CTO, technologist to COO, Cheng Yi Chiao boasts a rich tech career history, having worked in various MNCs and startups. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions and family priorities, he left his role at a Malaysian AgriTech company.

Moving back to Singapore, Yi Chiao joined McDonald’s to gain a first-hand experience of a blue-collar worker. He had always wanted to join this fast-food giant as he used to lead a team of workers and hoped to strengthen his leadership skills. Then, he chanced upon SGInnovate’s PowerX Robotics programme through Facebook ads. The topic caught his attention and upon further research, he learnt that its trainees could acquire real-world skills at Deep Tech companies and applied for it.

Since November last year, Yi Chiao started his traineeship curriculum at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and was assigned to SGInnovate’s partner company, Polybee, for his on-the-job training. This gave him the opportunity to learn directly from the founder of the company. Yi Chiao expressed gratitude for his traineeship opportunity and hopes to stay on at Polybee to help enhance food security in Singapore. Although the pandemic had forced him to switch career from a tech leader to a trainee, he felt that “traineeship is but a title”. Yi Chiao believes that learning never stops and will continue to seek new areas for personal growth and obtain new skills and knowledge in the field of technology.

曾担任起步公司的首席技术官,也在多个领域积累了深厚的科技创新经验,但一场冠病疫情却打乱了郑以樵(37岁)的职业生涯,让他重新当起见习生,发展对机器人的兴趣。

郑以樵之前曾在国际商业机器公司(IBM)工作,也曾担任一家孟加拉起步公司的首席技术官,前年年底刚加入一家马来西亚农业科技公司,但加入不久后就遇上疫情。

他受访时指出,由于家中有两个年幼的孩子,他当时决定辞去新工作,返新与家人团聚,而回到本地找新工作时,他决定先到麦当劳当服务职员。

郑以樵说,他其实一直想要尝试这份工作,在马国工作时曾带领一队蓝领员工,因此如今想趁此机会亲身体验蓝领工作,加强领导能力。

在偶然的机会下,郑以樵在面簿广告上看到由新加坡创新机构推出的全职见习计划“PowerX”(机器人学)。

他起初质疑广告是否真实,但经过研究后发现该计划的见习生可到精深科技领域学习实际技能后,决定申请加入。

郑以樵自去年11月起在义安理工学院上课,并被安排到科技公司Polybee进行在职培训,让他有机会直接向公司创办人学习经商之道。

虽然疫情让郑以樵从高职位转为见习生,但他并不介意,并认为“见习生只是个头衔”。

他说:“如果有机会,我很乐意留在Polybee工作,增强新加坡和其他地区的食品安全。学习是永无止境的,所以我相信会继续寻求个人发展的机会,学习科技等领域的新技能和知识。”
