Artificial Intelligence: Research Strength and Ecosystem in Alberta, Canada

Canada has emerged as a leader in global artificial intelligence (AI development, and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) at University of Alberta (UAlberta) is one of the three AI superclusters in Canada. UAlberta's game and AI development are world-renown. AlphaGo, developed by the team at Google DeepMind, was led by AMII Ph.D. David Silver and AMII Postdoctoral Fellow Aja Huang. And "game research" has always been a driver of innovation, and provides a technical base for other major applications in more generalized problems. AMII has application impact in the areas of Precision Health and Legal Informatics as well.

AMII is a research lab of UAlberta and its researchers hail from the Department of Computing Science, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the School of Public Health. The team conducts leading-edge research to push the bounds of academic knowledge, and forges business collaborations both locally and internationally to create innovative, adaptive solutions to the toughest problems facing Alberta, Canada and the world. Over the period from 2000-2017, AMII is the number 2 ranked AI/ML institute in the world (see csrankings.org), second to CMU, and first in Canada.

Dr. Randy Goebel, Professor of Computer Science, University of Alberta; Founder/Researcher of AMII
Randy Goebel is a Professor of Computing Science in the Department of Computing Science, Faculty of Science, and principal investigator in the Alberta Innovates Centre for Machine Learning (AICML). He received his B.Sc. (Computer Science), M.Sc. (Computing Science), and Ph.D. (Computer Science) from the Universities of Regina, Alberta, and British Columbia, respectively.
 
Professor Goebel's theoretical work on abduction, hypothetical reasoning and belief revision is internationally well known, and his recent application of practical belief revision and constraint programming to scheduling, layout, and web mining is now having industrial impact. His recent research is focused on the application of machine learning to a variety of areas, including information extraction in health and medicine, and formalization of visualization.
 
Randy has previously held faculty appointments at the University of Waterloo, Multimedia University (Malaysia), Hokkaido University (Japan), the University of Tokyo (Japan), and he is actively involved in academic and industrial collaborative research projects in Canada, Japan, China, and Germany.

Bruce Alton, Founder, A-Partners
Bruce Alton is the founder of A-Partners which invests in, advises and operates companies that utilize artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analytics as a competitive business advantage.

A-Partners is developing a portfolio of equity investments in early stage technology companies and Bruce serves as an advisor to businesses, investors and government agencies on innovation and strategy.

He has been a company founder and senior operating executive and his thirty-year business career has spanned software development, advanced manufacturing, venture capital, energy and real estate.

In 1987, Bruce founded his first company as a university student and after graduation became focused on entrepreneurship and being at the intersection of technology and business.

In 1993, he founded one of Alberta’s first internet and multimedia developers, Blackstone Multimedia Inc., which experienced 100% annual growth rates during his term as President and completed award-winning projects for Apple Computer.

From 1997 to 2001, he was a partner in two venture capital initiatives and from 2001 to 2007 was a senior executive in Micralyne Inc., a nanotechnology and MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) advanced manufacturing company. Responsible for revenue generation, he played a key role growing the company from $6 million to over $23 million in revenues.

From 2007 to 2017, he was Chief Operating Officer of Touchstone Holdings Ltd. a privately-held holding company with operations in the real estate, hospitality and energy industries as well as private equity investments in high growth enterprises. As an investor, Bruce had a specific focus on the data analytics industry. After a decade at Touchstone, he founded A-Partners in 2017.

Bruce is an invited speaker at entrepreneurship and technology conferences and was previously named as one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People by Alberta Venture Magazine. He has been recognized for his work with several Alberta community organizations including the A100 – Alberta Technology Entrepreneurs Organization; the Kids With Cancer Society; the Alberta Economic Development Authority and the University of Alberta School of Business.

He is based in Edmonton, Alberta.

  • What Can We Expect from Machine Cognition

    Recent decades have witnessed the remarkable progress in artificial intelligence (AI). However, there are still opposing views on the prospect of AI as being yet another cyclic hype or a new development with sustaining power. As the evidence becomes less controversial in the area of recognition, we focus the discussion on the next level of mental capacity necessary to intelligent behaviors, namely, the capability of cognition that involves knowledge acquisition, inference and reasoning, and reinforcement learning. We present our views by way of the current status of Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG), a project in Microsoft Research that teaches machine to obtain knowledge by reading scholarly publications, and contemplate what machine can do in the near future based on the trajectory being observed thus far. As MAG is open to the public, how it can be used through PySpark and what types of applications it has enabled will also be described.
