The Appier Story: Building an AI Startup from the Ground Up
Presented by Appier. Partnered with SGInnovate
At this first Appier AI Masterclass, Appier’s CEO and Co-Founder Chih-han Yu will share his own journey in AI and how together with a few friends, they decided to start a company to realise their vision for how AI can contribute to society.
Chih-Han Yu is CEO and co-founder of Appier, a leading AI company whose mission is to help enterprises solve their most challenging business problems with AI-powered platforms. Under his leadership, Appier has grown from a 4-person living room startup to a multinational leading AI company in Asia, recognised as one of the top 50 revolutionary AI companies by Fortune Magazine.
In 2016, Chih-Han was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, making Appier the only Asian AI company to make the list. Prior to Appier, Chih-Han has authored dozens of research articles in the field of AI, robotics and machine learning. In 2010, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in AI from Harvard University, where his doctoral thesis was nominated as the best thesis of the year in the field of multi-agent AI. Prior to Harvard, Chih-Han earned his master's degree from Stanford’s AI Lab, where he made fundamental contributions in applying machine learning to autonomous robots such as four-legged robots and self-driving vehicles.

What Can We Expect from Machine Cognition
Recent decades have witnessed the remarkable progress in artificial intelligence (AI). However, there are still opposing views on the prospect of AI as being yet another cyclic hype or a new development with sustaining power. As the evidence becomes less controversial in the area of recognition, we focus the discussion on the next level of mental capacity necessary to intelligent behaviors, namely, the capability of cognition that involves knowledge acquisition, inference and reasoning, and reinforcement learning. We present our views by way of the current status of Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG), a project in Microsoft Research that teaches machine to obtain knowledge by reading scholarly publications, and contemplate what machine can do in the near future based on the trajectory being observed thus far. As MAG is open to the public, how it can be used through PySpark and what types of applications it has enabled will also be described.Topics:

SGC Business Magazine published an editorial contribution by Steve Leonard on the startup landscape in Singapore. Steve highlighted that while Singapore is helping drive some of ASEAN’s booming digital economy, most startups in Singapore are building businesses around consumer-facing technology. He emphasised the importance for Singapore to create startups that pursue ‘deep tech’ products and how SGInnovate was formed to tackle the challenges faced by these startups such as the lack of investment, the scarcity of talent and the long gestation period for commercialisation.
