Overview

Organised by the Singapore Clinical Research Institute, the virtual talk focuses on the role of the Strategic Research Area in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (SFOepi) at Karolinska Institutet in developing and integrating the unique resources for epidemiological and biostatistical research in Sweden.

SFOepi was established to strengthen Sweden's world-class research infrastructure and accelerate discoveries that improve population health. By leveraging unique national resources, including biobanks, large population cohorts, health registries and electronic health records, SFOepi supports cutting-edge epidemiological and biostatistical research that advances understanding of the determinants and mechanisms of health and disease.

As Chair of SFOepi, A/Prof Elizabeth Arkema will share the rationale behind the initiative, its strategic approach to funding and developing the research environment, and how grant investments are designed to maximise scientific impact. She will also highlight landmark studies enabled through SFOepi and discuss the initiative's future priorities in maintaining Karolinska Institutet's international leadership in epidemiology and biostatistics.

About the speaker:

A/Prof Elizabeth Arkema received her Masters and PhD in epidemiology from the Harvard TH Chan school of public health. She undertook her postdoctoral training at Karolinska, where she currently holds a senior researcher and associate professor position.

Her focus is on advancing understanding of complex immune-mediated diseases including lupus and sarcoidosis. Her work integrates epidemiologic methods with clinical data to investigate risk factors, biological signatures and outcomes to improve how these conditions are understood and managed. She has extensive experience working with large-scale data and in multidisciplinary collaborations, bringing together epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical research.

She currently serves as Chair of the Strategic Research Area in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (SFOepi) at Karolinska Institute where she leads efforts to strengthen collaboration, support research development and shape strategic priorities in epidemiology.
