What if we could assess more treatments, answer important clinical questions faster, and get effective therapies to patients sooner? The multi-arm, multi-stage (MAMS) platform trial design was developed to do exactly that.

In this webinar, Professor Mahesh (Max) Parmar will explain the principles behind the MAMS design and discuss its far-reaching impact on clinical research. Developed to improve the efficiency of clinical trials, MAMS platform designs allow several treatments to be evaluated simultaneously within a single study while dropping ineffective treatments and adding new treatments as the trial continues. As such, effective interventions can be identified more rapidly, reducing the time taken for new treatments to reach patients.

Using the landmark STAMPEDE (Systemic Therapy in Advancing or Metastatic Prostate Cancer: Evaluation of Drug Efficacy) trial in prostate cancer as a case study, Prof Max will outline how this pioneering design enabled multiple over-arching translational studies to be linked to a single trial vehicle, producing practice-changing results and improving the life expectancy for patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Designed for a broad audience, his presentation will also examine how MAMS and platform trial approaches are being applied across a wide range of diseases and their real-world impact on shaping clinical trials.

Prof Max Parmar

Professor Mahesh (Max) Parmar is Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at University College London and Director of both the Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence in Clinical Trial Innovation (CCTI) and the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology (ICTM). An internationally recognised clinical trialist and methodological researcher, Prof Max’s work has transformed the design and delivery of clinical trials. He developed and led the application of the multi-arm, multi-stage (MAMS) platform trial design and has been responsible for major studies in cancer, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Prof Max is a leader of the internationally influential STAMPEDE trial, which has transformed the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and is recognised as one of the first and most successful platform trials ever conducted. He was awarded an OBE in 2019, and the RSSs Bradford Hill Medal in 2024 for his contributions to clinical trials research.
