Overview

The primary structure of this 3-month course is hands-on practical lesson and guide through the use of data analysis and data visualization tools in a business context.  E.g., developing a revenue growth strategy that is based data and presenting the insights and recommendations.  The skills taught can be applied to any data sets and in almost all business contexts, e.g., budgeting, operations management, sales and marketing, finance, R&D, etc.

This part-time course will be a hybrid of Synchronous and Asynchronous learning.  Every week, there will be synchronous (online face-to-face) sessions and asynchronous access to additional learning material (e.g. articles, white papers, videos, etc.)

Trainees will have to complete and submit an assignment and/or assessment quiz each week. As much of the course training and assignments are hands-on, the participants will be spending a considerable amount time doing the assignments and reading the materials asynchronously.  Participants will also have to work on an end-of-module project and to present it.

Trainees will be using NTU’s e-Learning Platform to access the content and Discussion Boards. Through lectures, talks, hands-on learning of data analysis and visualization tools, and presentations will be carried out over Zoom and NTU’s Blackboard LMS platform.

This programme has been designed by industry professionals and practitioners to upgrade existing capabilities with the practical aspects of data mining and preparation, data analysis and visualization. Through guided hands-on work and instruction, trainees will gain the knowledge on how to apply the core aspects of dealing with data that they will find themself in any job and role, and in any industry.

Course Description & Learning Outcomes

Data Wrangling, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and Data Management

Data analysis begins with gathering and preparing data. Learners will explore key concepts in data management, data wrangling, and exploratory data analysis, fundamental skills for any data analyst. They will learn how to create and update relational databases, a common type of database used in organizations.

The course covers the use of SQL to extract data and incorporates GenAI tools to enhance the process. This module is designed for beginners with no prior programming experience. Learners will develop practical SQL skills and apply them to a small group project.

Analysing and Interpreting Data

Knowing how to analyze data, extract insights from data, interpreting charts and analytics, and presenting the analysis to a varied audience is a competency that is a “must have” for any individual, firm or organisation. Businesses and organizations are already operating in a connected, digital and knowledge environment, where business intelligence and insights underlie an organisation business advantages.

Learners will learn how to get the most out of MS Excel’s “Data Analysis” ToolPak for purposes like time series analysis and scenario forecasting. The focus is on analytics approach and techniques to be used in a wide range of job roles. 

Communicating Insights, Dashboarding and Data Storytelling

In the realm of data, uncovering insights is just the beginning; the real challenge is effectively communicating those insights to diverse audiences. This course is designed to equip learners with the skills to transform complex data into clear, actionable visuals.

They will learn how to use applications like Tableau for data visualization and storytelling, incorporating GenAI to enhance their learning experience. The course will also cover best practices for creating impactful visualizations, enabling learners to quickly identify performance indicators, anomalies, and key insights.

By the end of the course, attendees will be proficient in using data visualization tools and techniques to communicate insights efficiently and effectively.

Real-World Applicability:

The content and curriculum is specifically designed to equip trainees with skills related to aspects of data mining and preparation, data analysis and visualization. Skills like data analysis and data storytelling are core and portable skills that complement existing domain knowledge and skill set.

Coaching and Learning-by-Doing:

Through the use of current data in the training, trainees will have ample hands-on practise of the approach and techniques taught in the various modules. Trainees will get ample opportunities to ask the trainers about real-world applications.

Building a Portfolio of Project Work:

There will be more than enough opportunities for trainees to work on mini-projects and presentations designed by trainers. The final course quiz will further serve to validate understanding of the key concepts and takeaways.

Francis Tay, Programme Director, NTU Academy for Professional and Continuing Education (NTU PACE)
Francis Tay

Francis is currently a lecturer at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School for Communications and Information (WKWSCI), teaching Business Intelligence and Information Entrepreneurship in the Master of Knowledge Management course. His courses are also taken up by students reading for their Master of Information Systems, Master of Information Studies and Master of Mass Communications. He has also taught Organizational Leadership and Information Sources and Services in the Master of Information Studies course. He has been teaching at NTU for more than 10 years. He is concurrently a Director at Singapura Management Pte Ltd, a corporate services company providing bookkeeping, tax and other services to local and foreign SMEs. He founded NextGen Ventures Pte Ltd, an equity investment company that focuses on technology and Internet-related businesses. He has held senior positions in government and government-linked organizations.

Mr Kan Hwa Heng

Hwa Heng is currently an adjunct lecturer teaching at both degree and diploma levels in various institutes of higher learning. He teaches information technology subjects such as object-oriented programming, web application development, accounting information systems, and data analytics and visualisation. He has more than 20 years of experience in the information technology industry. He performed various technical roles including software development, technical pre-sales and IT project management. He developed and maintained enterprise applications in the government, banking and healthcare domains. He obtained his MBA (Management of Information Technology) and Honors degree (Computer Technology) from NTU. He has a Specialist Diploma in Business & Big Data Analytics and a Specialist Diploma in Supply Chain Management from Nanyang Polytechnic. He is also a certified Project Management Professional and a certified Tableau Desktop Specialist.

 Ms Khoo Seok Teng

Seok Teng is an adjunct lecturer with over 10 years of experience teaching degree and diploma-level courses to pre-employment students and adult learners in various institutes of higher learning. She specialises in accounting, finance, and, more recently, data analytics and visualisation. Before lecturing, she amassed nearly 20 years of corporate experience across industries such as hospitality, stockbroking, telecoms, and the public sector. She held financial leadership roles overseeing reporting, financial planning, M&A due diligence, and investor relations for a NASDAQ-listed company. Seok Teng holds an Honours degree in Computer and Information Sciences from NUS and an MBA in Management of IT from NTU. She is a CFA charterholder, a Chartered Accountant (Singapore), and a certified Tableau Desktop Specialist.
