Overview

The DevOps Foundation course is a three-day preparatory programme that provides a comprehensive introduction to the latest principles, practices, and thinking within the DevOps community. The course is designed to provide a baseline understanding of key terminology, ensuring a shared vocabulary for effective communication and collaboration. It is intended for a broad audience, from business-side professionals to technical experts, to help them understand the mutual benefits of DevOps for business and IT.  

A key focus of the curriculum is to foster improved workflows, communication, and feedback loops between software developers and IT operations professionals. This cultural and professional movement emphasizes collaboration, integration, and automation. The course includes real-world case studies from high-performing organisations like ING Bank, Capital One, and Disney to provide tangible examples of the value of DevOps.

Course Description & Learning Outcomes

The DevOps Foundation course is designed to provide participants with a solid grasp of DevOps' fundamental concepts and their practical application. The course curriculum is structured to cover a wide range of topics, ensuring that participants gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of the discipline.  

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the objectives and vocabulary of DevOps.  

  • Identify the benefits of DevOps for both business and IT.  

  • Become familiar with core DevOps principles and practices, including Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, testing, and security.  

  • Learn how to improve workflows, communication, and feedback loops within their organisations.

  • Gain practical knowledge of automation practices, such as deployment pipelines and DevOps toolchains, including an understanding of Cloud, Containers, and Kubernetes.  

  • Acquire the skills to scale DevOps practices across the enterprise.  

  • Gain insights into critical success factors and key performance indicators (KPIs).  

  • Be exposed to real-life examples and results from high-performing organisations.  

The course content is organised into several key outlines:

  • Exploring DevOps: Defines DevOps and its importance.  

  • Core DevOps Principles: Covers fundamental concepts like The Three Ways, the Theory of Constraints, Chaos Engineering, and Learning Organisations.  

  • Key DevOps Practices: Discusses Continuous Delivery, Site Reliability & Resilience Engineering (SRE), DevSecOps, ChatOps, and Kanban.

  • Business and Technology Frameworks: Explains the relationship between DevOps and frameworks such as Agile, ITSM, and Lean.  

  • Culture, Behaviors & Operating Models: Explores how to define and implement a DevOps-friendly culture, including behavioral models and organisational maturity models.  

  • Automation & Architecting DevOps Toolchains: Details the use of CI/CD, Cloud, Containers, and Kubernetes in building a modern DevOps toolchain.  

  • Measurement, Metrics, and Reporting: Emphasises the importance of both technical and business metrics for measuring and reporting on the impact of DevOps.  

  • Sharing, Shadowing and Evolving: Focuses on collaborative platforms, immersive learning, and the evolution of change.
