After five editions Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific is back in Singapore to showcase the work of the most remarkable entrepreneurs and researchers from Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan. Since its creation in 2014, the Asia Pacific community has been growing exponentially, always pursuing the same objective: to award innovation, ingenuity, and advances towards addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. As we call for nominations for the 2019 class of young innovators, let us celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship with an inspiring talk by visionary mixed reality pioneer and Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific judge, Prof Adrian David Cheok. Come to this gathering and find out more on how you can be nominated or nominate others for this prestigious award. 

Everysense Everywhere Human Communication - This talk outlines new facilities that are arising in the hyperconnected internet era within human media spaces. This allows new embodied interaction between humans, species, and computation both socially and physically, with the aim of novel interactive communication and entertainment. Humans can develop new types of communication environments using all the senses, including touch, taste, and smell, which can increase support for multi-person multi-modal interaction and remote presence. In this talk, we present an alternative ubiquitous computing environment and space based on an integrated design of real and virtual worlds. We discuss some different research prototype systems for interactive communication, culture, and play.

Speaker: Prof. Adrian David Cheok

Adrian David Cheok is Director of the Imagineering Institute, Malaysia, and Chair Professor of Pervasive Computing at City, University of London. He is Founder and Director of the Mixed Reality Lab, Singapore. He has been working on research covering mixed reality, human-computer interfaces, wearable computers and ubiquitous computing, fuzzy systems, embedded systems, power electronics. He has successfully obtained approximately $30 million dollars in funding for projects in the area of wearable computers and mixed reality from several MNCs and government-linked organisations. His research has been featured on CNN, CNBC, ABC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic and many other top tier media outlets. Throughout his career he has received several awards, fellowships and prizes, including the title of “Honorary Expert” by Telefonica and El Bulli, the number one restaurant in the world at the time.

  • What Can We Expect from Machine Cognition

    Recent decades have witnessed the remarkable progress in artificial intelligence (AI). However, there are still opposing views on the prospect of AI as being yet another cyclic hype or a new development with sustaining power. As the evidence becomes less controversial in the area of recognition, we focus the discussion on the next level of mental capacity necessary to intelligent behaviors, namely, the capability of cognition that involves knowledge acquisition, inference and reasoning, and reinforcement learning. We present our views by way of the current status of Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG), a project in Microsoft Research that teaches machine to obtain knowledge by reading scholarly publications, and contemplate what machine can do in the near future based on the trajectory being observed thus far. As MAG is open to the public, how it can be used through PySpark and what types of applications it has enabled will also be described.
