Hashgraph: High Performance Consensus Algorithm that is Faster, Fairer and More Secure than Blockchain
What is Hashgraph?
Hashgraph is a fundamentally new type of distributed ledger technology/consensus algorithm, developed by the US-based company Swirlds, that is faster (few hundred thousand pre-shard transactions per second), fairer (consensus time stamping) and more secure (asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant) than blockchain. The technology came out of stealth recently and was selected (over well-known blockchain technologies) by the NCUA (National Credit Union Association) in the United States as the basis for a new platform that will serve the 6000 credit unions in North America.
The speed, fairness and security properties of Hashgraph introduces a much broader range of use cases and applications that were not possible before, these include:
- Distributed Capital Markets
- A global cryptocurrency with native micropayments
- Improved collaboration apps
- Distributed Global Gaming (eg. Distributed MMOs, such as World of Warcraft), and
- Distributed Auctions
